That's why I tell my kids, if you don't get into MIT, go anywhere.
Harsh I know, but shows my sentiment. My wife says Vanderbilt, but I know they are just one of many expensive private schools.
Its hard to get kids or parents to put the school into perspective.
I asked some parents recently if school-name mattered. They said yes, it give contacts. I then asked if they got their recent job from college-contacts, they said no.
I got my current job from the church I attend. It was an accident, but there you have it....
Some people make lucrative connections at college, but the vast majority don't. Even the ones that go to the Ivy League and other prestigious and very expensive places.
I do think MIT and places like CalTech are different because they collect top minds. You have an environment of remarkable resources. But, even this is no guarantee.
I'm skeptical that most people have confidence in these 'top' institutions out of familiarity with hard data.
