I often felt that at big universities the professors' attitudes were: "I teach in order to do research." While at smaller colleges, the attitude is more: "I do research in order to teach."

I couldn't agree more, and it's such a shame. Plus, so many know very little about what's necessary to teach well, and have no incentive to learn it.
